We are pleased to share the engaging insights from the recent Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference held from 30th May to 1st June 2024 in Rome. A highlight was the participation of Mrs. Anna Schmaus-Klughammer, representing the European Campus Rottal-Inn. Mrs. Schmaus-Klughammer, use case coordinator of the med4PAN project led a discussion with researchers on cutting-edge technological advancements in healthcare.
The focus of her discussion was the implementation of a 5G private campus network and its transformative impact on medical applications. She elaborated on innovative tools such as the Whole Slide Scanner, which facilitates remote diagnoses, and advanced wound monitoring systems, both pivotal in enhancing patient care through rapid and accurate medical assessments from a distance.
Interestingly, the session ventured into the realm of extraterrestrial application, with researchers inquiring about the feasibility of employing these advanced medical technologies in space environments. This discussion opened a thoughtful comparison between remote and rural areas on Earth and the isolated, resource-limited conditions in space. Mrs. Schmaus-Klughammer articulated how technologies, developed for rural healthcare could indeed be adapted for space missions, where similar challenges like distance, latency, and the necessity for autonomy are prevalent.
The conference provided a unique platform for knowledge exchange and showcased how terrestrial innovations in 5G technologies could potentially improve medical care, both on Earth and beyond.
